Lawn Aerators

You may think that lawn aerators are not really necessary for lawn maintenance. But this notion is very wrong. Air is one of the essential nutrients no ordinary lawn can do without. In fact, the lack of aeration is one of the primary causes of lawn problems. The lack of such is actually caused by the top portion of the soil becoming too compact or solid, that air cannot go through the soil that desperately needs it. Yes, soil does need to breathe once in a while. Thus, it would be better to purchase a lawn aerator, in order to regulate such a process.

But what exactly is a lawn aerator? And how does this work? Because the soil has become too compressed over time, then there is a need to produce cavities or holes on your lawn. These cavities allow more movement for the soil and other helpful organisms, like earthworms and such. And with aeration come a lot of benefits as well.

For starters, aeration promotes more access of nutrients and water to reach the very roots of soil. Because of this, the levels of oxygen are inevitably raised, then there would also be more chances for the roots to grow. But there is also one main disadvantage entailed in the use of lawn aerators. When you take lawn aerators out of the soil, there is that chance of soil particles, and even roots, getting plugged out as well. Thus, the usage of lawn aerators can indeed cause some damage to your lawn. But there is no immediate concern for worry. The grass of your lawn itself is stimulated just enough in that its roots would fill the holes left because of the plug out. So, the advantages of using a lawn aerator do outweigh the disadvantages.

So, what do you need to do in order to know how to use a lawn aerator? What makes a good lawn aerator? A common lawn aerator that you can use is actually a spading fork. If you don’t have one in your tool shed, then you can use a sod-coring tool. Using these to poke your lawn can indeed be enough for lawn aeration already. But for larger lawns and such, it would not be practical to use these simple tools at all. It would be easier and more practical to use a commercial lawn aerator. This is because larger lawns need aeration in an inch-by-inch process. And using simple hand-held tools would make the process daunting and very long to finish. Thus, a gas powered lawn aerator would be better to use for this.

But before you go on and scout hardware stores for lawn aerators for sale, there are still certain things you need to consider. The primary would be how often your lawn would need to be aerated. Not all lawns have the same type of grass or soil, as expected. There are some lawns that have clay soil, which is quite bad when it comes to aeration. Clay soil becomes very compact over time that it becomes quite difficult for air to go through the soil. Thus, if your lawn has this type of soil, then you just might need to have it aerated more frequently. You can even try getting aeration shoes yourself! These are not shoes per se, for they are actually sandals in form. The soles of these sandals have tiny spikes in the form of triangles, which are used mainly for aerating soil. All you have to do is strap these sandals onto your ordinary pair of shoes. And by walking across your lawn, or playing garden sports for instance, you can already improve the quality of your lawn in no time at all.
