Lawn Rollers

When you are mowing your lawn, it’s not out of the ordinary to want for your lawn to be even all throughout. This is precisely why a lot of people use lawn rollers in the maintenance of their lawn. Lawn mowers just don’t do the job that completely, as it turns out. And with the help of lawn rollers attached to mowers, the desired effect is easily achieved.

But what exactly is a lawn roller? And how do lawn rollers do the job? Just attach the lawn roller to your mower, and just drive your mower all throughout the lawn. Maneuvering lawn rollers over your lawn bends the grass blades in the direction you are mowing the lawn at. And this gives an even finish to the lawn mowing process.

There are a lot of lawn rollers that you can choose from. There is the steel lawn roller, which is quite popular in the market. These lawn rollers come in different sizes, ranging from 40 inches to just about 64 inches. The stronger brand in the market today is the Swisher Steel Lawn Roller. Aside from steel lawn rollers, there are also poly lawn rollers in the market. A distinct difference between these two kinds of rollers is actually their sizes. The small lawn roller of the two is the poly lawn roller. But a lot of people still prefer to buy the smaller one because it is actually more convenient to use and to store during winter. And, since it’s smaller, there is also the price difference that appeals to people worldwide.

But if you would look at the fundamentals and the mechanism of the equipment, it’s not really that hard to imagine building a lawn roller. But how exactly is this done? How do you build a homemade lawn roller? In order to know how to make a lawn roller, you would need to know certain steps first. And the first step in the lawn roller plan is the materials that your roller would be made of. It would be hard to build lawn rollers made of steel, although this would still be doable, depending on the budget you have running on this project. But if there are budgetary constraints, well, you can actually build a lawn roller out of scrap parts and items that you can buy from the local hardware store. You can also use concrete, which is not that expensive to come by.

You can start by building a small one, one that is about 20 to 24 inches long, and around 10 inches in diameter. If you go all the way to 24 inches, your lawn roller would be just around 150 pounds. Use a cardboard tube to form the concrete footings for your lawn roller. Make two plywood disks that are of the same diameter as of the insides of the cardboard tubes. These disks would cover the hollow edges of the cardboard tube once wet concrete fills it. Leave the structure for around 48 hours, in order for the concrete to dry out and be solid. Once the concrete tube structure is ready, you can now attach the wheels to its sides. Make sure that the wheels be doused with enough oil so that they would be properly lubricated. These wheels should then be attached to a makeshift handle, which would be used to ultimately guide your lawn roller over the lawn. The length of your makeshift handle would totally depend on your convenience. The material that makes up your handle should be to your discretion as well.

Lawn rollers are not that difficult to construct, as long as you have the needed materials and proper instructions. There are also a lot of do-it-yourself instructional materials for constructing lawn rollers all over the web. You can check these just about anywhere.
