A lawn is not really completely finished if you have not used a string trimmer to work on it. Your lawn has to have a neat edge to it as well. And this is what string trimmers are for.
String trimmers actually make use of a monofilament line that is flexible in nature instead of the usual blades. This handheld device has a head for cutting at one end of its long shaft. This long shaft has a handle of its own. At times, string trimmers come with shoulder straps for the convenience of the user. String trimmers also come with an internal combustion engine. This actually means that the engine has a space called a combustion chamber, wherein the oxidation of gas and air happens. This process of oxidation should happen very rapidly for combustion to occur. Hot gases are then stimulated to expand, causing direct pressure onto the internal parts of the string trimmers. Thus, the engine is then stimulated to operate or function.
But the commercial string trimmer, or the electric one that is, comes with an electric motor in its cutting head. An advantage of using the electric string trimmer is that it is lighter and has devices that are very easy to use, being user-friendly and all. But because they are operated using electricity, the extent as to which they can be used depends on the length of its power cord. This is the obvious disadvantage of the electric string trimmer. Thus, if you have an expansive lawn, then it would be impractical to buy this type of commercial string trimmer. The more practical one of the string trimmers that you should get is the gas string trimmer.
Gas string trimmers or petrol-engine powered trimmers mostly have displacement motors or engines that are of 21 cc. That is just the minimum as well. Because of this, this particular string trimmer is actually quite heavier than the electric string trimmer. But the obvious advantage here is that it does not need to be connected to any power source or outlet at all. Thus, more work can be done with the gas string trimmer. The cutting head of gas string trimmers have what is called a safety shield that is inclined towards the side of the user. This way, the user would be protected from any shards and such that can be very sharp to the touch. The head might also have what is called a spool, or a rotating hub of sorts. This makes the usage of the gas string trimmer more mobile, so to speak. Because of its heavier weight, the gas string trimmer is often suspended onto the user’s body, and it can be controlled using both hands. This way, it would be easier to control the heavy trimmer.
Now that you have an inkling of which of the best string trimmers you should consider getting, let us tackle safety precautions. You see, the monofilament line string trimmers is quite safer than using the metal blade of lawn mowers and such. But there are still certain disadvantages users should be wary about. For starters, the rotating hubs or spools of these trimmers have an inclination to take hold of clothing items. Another thing that the rotating hubs can do is they actually hurl off hard substances they come in contact with. Rocks, pebbles, dirt, and other debris can be hurled if they come in contact with the rotating hub of a string trimmer. And they can very well hit the user. Thus, it is recommended for the user to wear clothing that does not have stray threads and such. The user should also wear safety goggles against the potential hurling particles coming his or her way.
